The 5 Common Myths about Home Remodels

We’ve all seen at least one home improvement show at some point in our lives…whether it be Trading Spaces, Love it Or List It, Fixer Upper, or Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (and those are just a few on a long list!).

The point being this: while all of these television programs are entertaining to watch in addition to being inspirational, the matter of the fact is, they can also be very misleading – which brings us to our topic today:

5 common Myths about Home Remodels

Myth #1: “If I do it myself, I will be able to save a ton of money.”

While we can appreciate & certainly respect everyone has a budget to abide by, doing it yourself will only cause more work in the end, if you are not a professional. The quality, time & ideas that an interior designer brings to the table are worth paying for. The job will be completed right the first time around, by a professional who has the required skill set necessary to complete the project successfully, and in a timely manner. If you don’t use a professional, there is much more room for errors to occur and you will only end up spending more money to make fixes in the end. DON’T DO IT!

Myth #2: “Remodeling is Easy & Fast!”

This is a big one, and exactly what these reality remodel shows want you to believe – which gives the client an unrealistic expectation and the designer an unrealistic timeline/goal to meet. So we’re here to give it to you straight; remodeling your home is a process and while the project may be smooth sailing, there is always going to be a “pause” here and there. This is completely normal as there are so many different aspects that tie into the remodel process.

Myth #3: “If we plan really well, there shouldn’t be any surprises.”

Even if you are super organized and on top of things, try to just go with the flow and expect the unexpected. It’s the best way to avoid becoming flustered and frustrated. The fact of the matter is, surprises may happen.

Myth #4: “Follow the latest design trends.”

Numerous home owners feel they need to follow the latest design trends – you don’t. For example, what was trending in the 80’s probably isn’t in 2019…stick with neutral colors & styles that will be both appealing now and in the future. If you eventually decide to sell your house, you will be thankful you did this, as it will not be so difficult to sell.

Myth #5: “Doing a home renovation means you will have to move out of the house until the project is complete.”

False. Professionals in this industry are used to working in areas with limited space and around occupants. They will also make a schedule with you, and give you plenty of notice when they need to start working.
